SACRIFICES WE MAKE FOR LOVE
“You need to reconsider your decision over the bash, this could be your chance of meeting your miss pretty-skinny?” Fred advised.
“Dude, can you stop calling her skinny, I know admire her equally” I lowered my face to my laptop as I read what was on the scream, and continued. “And just so we are clear, I don’t do crowds, I have told u this before.”
“Kangwa, get out of your shell this is ….”
“University ” I finished his sentence.” I know dude, but the CBU does not change people like me, people like me change the CBU. So go and have your so called fun at the first year bash. I know why I am here.”
” Gees! I give up on you. Stay and guard our room. And since u are on guard, don’t sleep I will be in anytime must find you awake. ” he said as he looked at himself one more time in the mirror and shortly he was out.
I thought of what he said, maybe he was right, I was being too strict with myself. How was I to meet febby once again? I questioned myself.
But I decided to stay back either way. What was meant to be would be I couldn’t force matters. Besides I wasn’t the kind of guy to be in a crowd or a noise place, in fact, i had never been to a night club my whole life and i wasn’t going to break my principle just to fit in the university life. I loved a private life but even though I had just known my roommate for a short time, I could tell that we were indeed two different people. Nevertheless, we bonded just fine and I felt free with him as though we had know each other outside the university.
I stayed up not because Fred told me so but because I was busy trying to revise what we had learnt since we got to the university. Although it was just introductions to the courses involved in accounting I was looking at the course outlines and what was coming ahead of us.
Fred came back after midnight and found me awake. I could tell he had been drinking because of his awful smell. But I chose not to comment, so after opening for him I went back to my PC and continued what I was doing. I had never drunk beer so I always avoided to argue with a drunk.
“Ngwangwa boi” he called me in a short form of my name I had never heard my whole life.
I couldn’t help but smile. Though I didn’t answer him at I the first call.
“Iwe ngwangwa, ala ba gelo ba pa CBU balemoneka bwino waishiba… ”
I still didn’t respond but I just had a crazy smirk on my face.
“Elo nachikweba shani? Ka gelo Kobe nachi kamona. Looking all pretty but skinny” he continued.
This time I couldn’t help but answer back. “Who was she with?” I asked, switching my attention from my PC to Fred.
“Hahahahaha relax nigga she was just with a her friend.” He said as he sat on the bed, kicked his boots off and fell on his back. Before I could say the next words, he shut his
eyes. I got his legs and put them on the bed, put him in a better sleeping position and shortly he was snoring.
I failed to continue with my work, I too went to my bed and lay down. All I could think of was the many questions I had for Fred that went unanswered that night,?.
How was she looking that night? Did she seem lonely or some good looking guy kept her company?
I thought of myself and pictured her besides me, the feeling so good. But could she even consider a guy like me, I wondered. My biggest challenge was how to meet her again and get her line. Where to begin from was an issue, I felt hopeless. All I had with me was her name. But were would I have begun from with only a name at an institution as CBU?
I struggled to sleep so I decided to make a mental budget of all the things I wanted to buy using the money which initially meant for my school fees. I planned to get a more advanced phone than the one I was using, some new clothes and shoes. All yes I thought of getting something for febby to impress her. I just had faith I could meet her again. I smiled at the thought and my heart was excited. With happy thoughts, I dozed off.
There is nothing I hated than being in a crowded place. Being the only child my parents had, I spent most of my time alone and enjoyed being indoors. Therefore, when I decided to go shopping with the money intended for my fees, I asked Fred to accompany me. We got on a bus to town and I bought a new phone from mobile city. Then I bought speakers for my laptop because I was a great fun of music, I bought canvas for both Fred and I from Beta store and a fees groceries. I was still left with about 1300 when we where going back to the boarding house.
We were so tired when we got back and feeling lazy to cook so we decided to eat from the university canteen. We headed to the canteen and Fred said the bill was on him so he went to make our order. I chose chicken, beans and nshima while he chose T-borne, rape and nshima. As he came to sit down, he had that fun look on his face and I knew something was either up or he had a crazy idea on his mind, or maybe he wanted to play a silly game on me which he was good at. He sat down smiling to himself like a complete fool. I couldn’t help it.
“Fred, close yo dental its not something I like to see” I told him.
“You should be begging me for information right now.” He kept smiling.
My heart skipped, it looked like he had a good piece this time.
“Just say what it is!” I said feeling irritated.
“You owe me for having bigger eyes and spotting your dream girl right here in the cafe” he said in a low tone of voice.
It had been about a week or more since I last saw her at the basketball pitch and to think she was right in the same room with me, I nearly went under the table. So much effect this girl had on me.
“Where exactly is she?” I finally asked
“The table right behind you” he pointed with his eyes.
“What do I do?” I asked, nearly sweating.
“Run away for your life and make sure to never meet her again.” He laughed out loud.
People looked to our table and I felt naked. That’s Fred, he was such a loud guy and the total opposite of me.
“She is waving at me.” He said.
He waved back and i was numb, i could barely touch my food. Next thing I saw he was winking. I got so angry at his gesture I was nearly getting up when he quickly said,” relax dude, am winking a her friend.”
I breathed a sigh of relief and smiled. “So u love her that much?” He continued.
“I don’t know Fred. I really like her and I know nothing about her except her name.”
” then go ahead and get to know her more.” He urged me.
I just couldn’t bring myself to face her, I was stuck on either to move to her table and ask for her line or wait for her take her leave then follow her outside and ask for it. What if she embarrassed me in front of people and refused to five me her line? No she couldn’t, she seems like a nice girl after all she asked to escort me to wait for Fred the other time at the basketball court. I battled within myself as Fred stared at me in awe.
“Which village do you come from dude” he mocked me. “C’mon be a man for once! This is……”
“The university….” I whispered the rest of his sentence as he liked to finish it.
“Hi” said the feminine voice that was now standing besides me.
“Hey Febby take a sit here and keep kangwa company as he eats his food which he has barely touched. I am done with my food and I have to go for my basketball training. See you.” He walked away before I could say a thing.
