Alice felt hungry, tired and nauseous. She hadnt had anything to eat since yesterday and she hadnt seen Tony since today. She was scared. She didnt want him to abandon her. And then she wondered if her mother knew where she was.
She looked at the other inmates of the cell, they were looking skinny and had dark circles around their eyes, they looked like monsters.
She relaxed on the cold wall, she was very hungry and very tired.
The cell opened and a policewoman who she later knew to be to Ekaite entered.
‘come, person wan see you’ Ekaite said and left.
Alice knew she was the one Ekaite was referring to her because she pointed at her. So she staggered to her feet with the little strenght she had and prayed it was Tony.
And it was Tony.
But there was something wrong with his countenance, he was staring at her dangerously, she was scared.
God help me, she prayed.
‘my love’, she called softly ‘how are you?’
He looked at her for a while before dropping a white eatery nylon in front of her, she took it and opened it, it was fried rice, jollof rice (in the same plate) with a mighty chicken lap and a chivita juice.
She smiled at him gratefully ‘thanks dear, i’m starving’
He looked away, then she heard him mutter something, but she didnt hear anything. He was behaving wierd.
‘Maria woke up,’ he said after few seconds of silence.
Her heart jumped into her mouth, and she quickly knelt down.
‘my God, thank you for vindicating me. I knew you would never let me down. God! So i’m out of this hell hole’ she said, she was very happy. Infact, she was no longer fatigued or hungry. She just wanted to leave there.
Tony blinked back the tears forming in his eyes, no! He would never cry in front of a murderer, never!
She stood up and hugged him, he just sat there motionless for a while, he wanted to just stay in her arms for sometime, at least to hold on to that memory.
Then he pushed her away, violently.
‘stay away from me you murderer!’ his voice was stern.
She was taken aback for a while ‘honey……’
‘dont honey me!’ he snapped ‘it was you. It was you who shot her. You wanted her dead. And it might also be you who killed your best friend. You decieved me, you made me believe you are an angel when you are a devil in disguise’
‘Maria mentioned who it was that shot her. And it was you!’
‘thats not true!’
‘who on earth would believe a horrible woman like you, you desperate sl.u.t.!’
Tears trickled down her cheeks ‘Maria said i was the one who shot her?’
‘my God! Thats a lie. I swear with my life and that of my son……’
‘you’ve said that a million times!’ he stood on his feet ‘i dont believe you anymore’
She fell on her knees and grabbed his trouser ‘i swear i’m innocent. I havent killed someone in my life, i swear’
A policeman entered immediately ‘we ransacked her house like you ordered us to do and we found this,’ he showed them a transparent nylon with a gun inside ‘we found this in her room’
‘are you going to deny this too?’
Alice cried ‘that gun belongs to my dad. I swear it Tony, it was in my room because i used it to threaten Gilbert one day and…..’
‘so you wanted to kill him too?’ Tony asked.
‘sir,’ the policeman said ‘we ran some tests on the gun and the gun had her fingerprints’
THREE WEEKS LATER.
Maria was discharged from the hospital when she was in a stable condition. She recovered quickly. The day she went home, she saw one white woman sitting in the sitting room with her legs crossed as if she owned the house. She couldnt believe it, could her dad have replaced Alice so quickly.
She didnt want any woman and she swore she was going to kill her if really she was her father’s new girlfriend.
By the time she was to be discharged, her dad had been in Abuja for a conference meeting so her new driver and one of the new maids had escorted her home.
‘hi,’ the white woman said smiling ‘you must be Maria, i’ve heard alot about you’
‘and you are?’ Maria asked as the new maid went to drop her belongings in her room.
‘i’m Ximena Valdez, i’m a Mexican, its nice to meet you’ Ximena said stretching her hands forward for a handshake.
Maria eyed her ‘keep your hand, i dont shake strangers’
Ximena shrugged and brought her hand down.
‘now who you are miss Mexican?’ Maria asked.
‘i’m your father’s friend. To be honest, we dated in secondary school’ Ximena replied with a cool smile.
‘then what are you doing here? Or has my dad started harbouring ex girlfriends in this house?’
Ximena frowned a little before smiling again, she didnt like this girl one bit.
‘no. I’m here because i came to visit him’
‘for what?’ Maria threw back ‘why? For what reason, do you have a child for him?’
‘no, why are you talking to me like that?’
‘i want to understand the reason for your visit miss Mexican, tell me why you came to my father’s house and relaxing as if you own the house, like you built and furnished it’
‘your dad asked me to stay here’
‘why? Is he sleeping with you or what?’
Ximena stopped smiling, she didnt understand something about this girl.
‘i’m staying here because he asked me to’ she said.
‘and i asked you why? Is he sleeping with you?’
‘no, i’m not that cheap’
Maria studied her for few seconds, then grinned ‘you are beautiful sha but i dont allow girls come an inch close to my dad. You know why? Because he’s married, and married men arent supposed to touch other women right?’
‘your dad didnt marry Alice, did he?’
‘you knew Alice?’
‘yes, that murderer. I know her’
Maria kept quiet for some seconds ‘you know what miss Mexican, i want you to leave this place, leave this house immediately if you dont want trouble’
‘is that supposed to be a threat or what?’
‘its a threat’
‘well, sorry to say, you cant threaten me. I can see you are a little spoilt brat!’
‘and i can see you are a cheap s.lut!’
Ximena lost it and slapped her.
Maria was stunned for a few seconds, then she went to the bar, picked up a bottle, broke it on the wall and…….
Alice sat on the floor, her head on the wall and tears in her eyes. She placed her hands on her stomach, her pregnancy was eleven weeks now.
She blinked back the tears that were threatening to spill. If someone ever told her that she will in this kind of situation, she would never have believed.
Locked in this prison for doing something she knew nothing about, pregnant. The man she loved abandoned her, her mother, her best friend lied against her, and she was here all alone.
It was hard to believe that Tony could abandon her. And his baby. It was so cruel of him.
‘of everything you could be, i didnt know you could stoop so low as to kill someone’ her mother had said when she first visited her in the cell.
She cried as she remembered that horrible day, that was two weeks ago. When Ekaite had come to tell her mother was outside waiting for her, she felt happy. Very happy, that at least, she had someone to lean on.
But she wrong.
The moment she saw her mum, tears of joy had run down her cheeks, and she hugged her.
But to her utmost dismay, the woman she called her mother pushed her away with full force.
‘stay away from me you filth!’ Kofo’s voice was angry and irritated.
Alice was surprised and at the same time she wasnt surpised. She had expected that kind of reaction from her mother, a little.
‘just look at you,’ her mother said eyeing her scornfully ‘just look at the way you’ve lost alot of weight. God! It doesnt pay doing evil’
‘you……’ Alice said ‘dont….dont think i….i committed the…crime i was accused….accused of right?’
‘i didnt think, i know you committed the crime. You are so desperate, i know you can do anything so you could end up with a rich man but now, here you are, in this stinking cell, pregnant for a man with a daughter who hates you. You are the most foolish person on earth my dear’
Alice sobbed inwardly, hearing her mother say such things about her was so heartwrecking. But she wasnt surprised, she had heard her mother say more horrible things about her.
‘what of Angela? Is Angela still in the house?’ she asked with tear filled voice.
‘if not for Angela, what would i have done? She is the one who takes care of me, make me forget about the shameless daughter i have. Right now, i have only one daughter. And its Angela’
Alice closed her eyes as tears dropped ‘do you know what Angela did to me?’
‘she told the truth. She is truthful. She couldnt see evil and cover it up, just like you. She’s at peace right now, you know why? Because she exposed evil. Thats why you hate her’
‘please tell her to come see me’
‘i’m sorry i cant. That would be madness because you might just kill her. You are a psycho Alice, i will never let Angela, my daughter come close to you again, who knows what more crime you might commit again. I dont underestimate silly murderes like you’ she said.
Kofo didnt see it coming, until when Alice was on top of her, pounding her with all the strenght she could muster. From different directions, blows and slaps rained on her.
It took the intervention of some police officers to stop her daughter from beating the living daylight out of her.
By the time they could pull Alice from her, she had been seriously injured and was rushed to the hospital. She was bleeding profusely.
And the Angela had visited her(Alice) and warned her never to touch Kofo again.
‘she might not be your mother but she is my mother now! Dont you dare touch my mother again’ Angela had warned.
Alice had laughed at her face and even spat on it.
Angela was really shameless, claiming that Kofo was now her(Angela) mother. How silly!
It was only a matter time of time before she realised what a terribe woman she wanted to have as a mother.
Then, she remembered the particular event that turned her relationship with her mother into a bitter one.
Alice had been involved in a fight in his school that fateful monday morning, and so she had been suspended. She had gone home very early, at 9:30am.
She saw a strange car parked inside the compound, she wondered who the visitor inside was.
She knew her dad was away for a business trip in Abuja. So she entered the house. She didnt bother knocking, she just entered. And then she saw something, something very horrible.
Her mum was making out with another man! On the sofa!
The lovers didnt seem to notice her presence at all. The tv was showing a p–n movie.
The sight was so irritating she almost threw up.
That was when Kofo raised up her head to see Alice standing there. She immediately pushed the man on top of her away, then quickly reached for her wrapper and tied it around herself.
The man slowly dressed up and left the house as if nothing happened.
That night, Kofo had come to her room to try explaining things to her but she didnt listen and she vowed to tell her dad.
‘listen to me Alice, will you?’ Kofo said desperately.
‘i’m sorry i wont’
‘you dont know what happened, you dont understand what you saw!’
‘at least i saw you kissing another man, you want to tell me that i dont know the definition of kissing again?’
‘dont tell your dad anything because i swear, i will hate you for life if you do’
‘then hate me! Its non of my business’
‘and you are going to regret it. You are going to beg me to love you again’
‘daddy loves me. His love is enough for me. And he loves you too, i wonder why you had the guts to sleep with another man!’
‘do you know what your dad does in Abuja? Do you know?’
‘of course i know! He’s working his butts out just so he could give you a future!’
‘you know nothing!’
‘i know everything!’
‘do you even care to know the reason i slept with that man? Do you know?’
‘i dont want to know. And you know what mummy? I hate you. I hate you so much for betraying my dad. And i swear i’m going to tell him everything i saw. You were even watching p–n, God forbid! You are a disgrace to womanhood infact to motherhood!’
She saw the tears forming in her mother’s eyes but couldnt care less.
‘one day Alice, one day, you will become a mother and a wife and you will understand just what i’m passing through and you will know how it feels for your own child to call you a disgrace’
‘a disgrace, thats really what you and there would be no reason my child will call me a disgrace because i will never let any man touch me unless he’s my husband. I will give my virginity to my husband’
‘we will see about that’
And with that Kofo had left the room. In the days that followed, Alice noticed how withdrawn and miserable Kofo became. She hardly ate and she was emanciating.
That was when Angela was employed.
Then her mother fell ill and was admitted in the hospital. Then her father came back from Abuja.
She wanted to tell her dad everything but she wanted her mum to be hale and hearty first.
She couldnt help but also notice that her dad also looked withdrawn but then she thought it was because his wife was ill.
And then, when her mother was discharged, she planned to tell her dad during dinner. She just wanted her dad to know.
That morning, she had gone into their room and told Kofo that her game would be over tonight.
And despite the fact that Kofo pleaded with her and promised to change, she did tell her dad.
She had expected her dad to be mad, but instead he was calm. And the next thing he did really surprised her. He went on his knees in front of Kofo and vowed never to cheat on her again since she had made good her threat.
It was then she understood everything, her dad was cheating on her mum and her mum decided to reciprocate the gesture.
When her parents hugged, she felt like a fool. She hadnt listened to her mother’s explanation and had told her dad.
That marked the beginning of her mother’s hatred for her. She was very sorry and tried apologising but her mother never stopped calling her names at the slightest opportunity.
Her mother had said a time will come when she would need love from her and that time was now, but love was nowhere to be found
