I’m so sorry Alice, dont cry’ Tony said in an
attempt to calm Alice down but it seems the harder
he tried the louder she cried.
‘oh God! Why me’ she wailed.
Kofo was at one corner with her own sympatisers.
She wasnt crying but her eyes were very red.
Crying for over two days non stop has wiped away
her tears or perhaps they were dried up.
She couldnt imagine life with out Fred. She
attempted to take her life but luckily, Angela saw
her and called the attention of others.
Felix was sent to one of Kofo’s sisters to live with.
In the condition the whole household was in, he
shouldnt be there because he might not get the
love and attention he deserves.
‘its not the end of the world. If you can survive
your fiance’s death, then you can survive your
father’s. Besides look at your mother, do you think
you are in much agony than her. Do you think its
easy for her that she lost her husband? Come on
Alice, be strong. At least for your son and mother’
‘you dont understand do you? My dad is my
everything. The reason i’m still living. If it hadnt for
my dad, probably i would have commited suicide
after Benjamin died six years ago’ Alice said and
cried the more.
‘why?!’ Tony asked. It was silly he knew but he
wanted to know.
‘when Benjamin died and i found out that i was
expecting a baby, mum….threw me out of the
house. She called me names. Called me a harlot. A
w—e. A disgrace to my family. Then father was
out on a business trip. When he returned and found
out what happened, he came back for me but i
wasnt ready to go back. Thats why i started living
on my own’ Alice said and sobbed.
‘why would she do that?’
‘Because….because….she never liked me but she claimed she did’
‘i dont believe that. Your mother really cares for
you’ Tony said.
‘yeah, she does. But she couldnt stand by me
through one of the trying times of my life. She
called me a disgrace. Only my father consoled me,
took very good care of me but my mother….didnt
do a thing!’ Alice said crying the more.
Tony drew her closer and placed her head on his
‘dont cry anymore Alice’ was all he could say over
and over again.
Alice looked up and saw the proud looking figure
standing before her.
‘Gilbert! You!’ she asked furiously. Tony also
looked up and saw him.
There was fury in Gilbert’s eyes. He was angry to
see Alice with Tony again. He had come to
personally console her so he could probably get her
to develop a soft spot for him.
He quicky covered his anger with an annoying
‘hi’ he said.
Alice jumped up and landed him a hot slap on his
Everyone turned their eyes towards their direction.
‘get out! I am mourning my father and i do not
have time to deal with an idiot like you!’ Alice said
Gilbert looked down in embarrasment and with the
little pride he had left, he turned and left. He felt
like crying! What a shame.
‘you shouldnt have done that. He probably came
here in good faith to sympathise with you’ Tony
‘that guy is up to no good. He’s nothing but
badluck and nothing good comes from him’ Alice
Those words rang a bell in her head. Somehow she
felt someone had told her that before.
‘Alice is up to no good. She is nothing but badluck
and nothing good comes from her’
Kofo had said those words to her when she found
out she was carrying Felix.
Tears flowed from her cheeks. Amy soon rushed in
like she was being chased. She ram and hugged
‘i’m sorry about your father’s loss dear. Take
heart’ she said to Alice.
Gilbert drove like a mad man. He was so angry. He
kept on hitting the steering, cursing and hissing at
‘d–n you Alice! You must pay for this!’ he cursed
in anger as he drove to St Joseph Hospital. He
pulled up front of the hospital and came down. He
entered the hospital and went directly to where
Anabel was sitting.
‘ha! Uncle Gilbert’ Anabel said after raising up her
head and seeing Gilbert.
Gilbert looked around before facing Anabel.
‘how far with our runs?’ he asked.
‘i have everything under control Uncle Gilbert’ she
Gilbert made a fist.
‘what do you mean that you have everything under
control huh? Dont you know that Alice lost her
father? If you want to be a good friend, shouldnt
you go and console her? You should have told me
that you cant do the job instead of letting me
waste my time on you!’ Gilbert fumed in anger and
‘abeg sef. How much you even pay me?’ Anabel said and hissed.
Nneka was very shocked to hear from Tony that
Fred was dead. She couldnt believe her ears until
she confronted Queen Lateefa. She had told Nneka
the reason Fred died.
‘he tried running faster than his shadow. He thinks
he is smart’ Queen Lateefa said.
‘you killed him?’
‘he killed himself. Trying to leave Kuvudu is the
same as trying to commit suicide’ Queen Lateefa
Nneka heaved a sigh.
‘Fred shouldnt have died’
‘are you questioning my actions Nneka?’
‘no, no. I’m just saying’
Queen Lateefa disappeared.
‘oh my God! Fred’ Nneka said as she sat on her
When Maria called Gilbert to inform him about the
death of Fred, he said he knew already.
‘uncle what of Abby? I’ve been trying to reach her
but she isnt picking her calls. Can you please pass
the phone to her for me, please?’ Maria requested.
‘uhm, i dont think thats a good idea. I do not want
Abby to know that we are relating but i will try to
ask her about you so probably she would
remember and call you’ Gilbert said.
‘okay, thanks’ Maria said and hung up,
Abby entered the sitting room with a glass of water
which she gave to Gilbert.
‘thanks’ he said.
She sat on a sofa and directed her attention to the
‘eh, Abby, what of your best friend, Maria?’ he
‘oh, she is fine’
‘have you heard from her recently?’
‘i just dont want to associate with Maria again’
‘because i feel….i feel somehow whenever i’m with
her or in her house’
‘i dont understand’
‘there’s something spiritual happening in her
house. Anytime i’m there, something wierd always
This time, Gilbert’s curiousity increased.
‘as in?’ he asked.
Abby went ahead and told him everything
concerning the wierd voices and the wierd breeze.
‘i dont know but i think something diabolical is
happening there’ Abby said.
‘are you sure of everything you just told me now?’
‘yes uncle. I’m sure’
‘if thats so then dont go over to their house again.
If possible, quit that friendship’ Gilbert said.
‘yes uncle, thats what i will do. See, she’s been
calling since but i’ve not picked her calls. I’m even
going to delete her number sef’ Abby said.
‘please do’ Gilbert said.
(After the funeral)
‘so what next?’ Tony asked.
Alice shrugged ‘nothing else. Just to try and move on and resume my work’ she sniffed.
‘thats good. Take good care of yourself and your mother alright?’ ‘okay. I think i even need to sought out some things. There’s a room dad never allowed us to go into. I need to clear it up since he’s no more’ she said.
