SACRIFICES WE MAKE FOR LOVE
“Stop pushing!” “Stop pushing!” Different voices were shouting as the queue was getting longer and everyone wanted to be at the front to go into the office for first year student registration.
I was now feeling tired and almost giving up but I just had to register that day because I couldnt make it the previous day due to the long tiresome queue in which I had stood in all day but I couldn’t get to the front. The line was long and those that were coming after lunch could just go back hopelessly. But a few others could wait and persevere.
The copperbelt university is one of the big universities in Zambia and it has more than 10 000 students. Therefore registration of students is a process that goes on for a good number of days.
After about two hours of being in line, I was almost getting there, only 3 people where in front of me and I was getting very anxious. I thought of how being in this university made my mother feel, it was her dream to see me in university and my dad was more proud because i pick his course of interest. I personally always wanted to do accounts and that was my dad’s dream too. Although mum didn’t care about what course i was doing, she was in full support so long as i was at the university.
While thinking absent mindedly, I turned to my left and at sight of such a figure, my heart skipped a few times before I could look away. What a beauty she was to admire! I couldn’t help but smile at her, she was the most beautiful young Lady i had ever set my eyes on. Her eyes where as beautiful as the stars. Then she smiled back and I was lost on her charm. She had a frustrated look on her face though and I immediately knew it was because she was tired of waiting for her turn.
Just then I realised there was only one person before me and I was the next. I quickly signalled to her to come and stand in front of me. As she walked to the front, people shouted and mummers pierced through my ears like I had committed such a big crime.
“Ati ba good Samaritan atase! pali gelo” one shouted. I felt small at those words.
I felt even smaller when someone pushed me off the line saying I had given away my place already.
“Sela mwaiche, come back when you know what university is!” He shouted.
I walked away feeling real stupid. ” ama sacrifice yabupuba” another shouted as I walked further away facing down. I could still hear the laughter of the crowd as I turned around the corner.
It was after I reached my room when I realised I didn’t even get her name, but even if I got her name, how could I find her in such a big institute without knowing her course of study or where she is staying not even her number. I frowned and cursed myself! Wait, she didn’t even say any words of appreciation. At this point, I felt real used. Used by her smile, her looks and charm yet I didn’t even get her name.
I considered that as a foolish act that happened randomly and decided to brush it off and concentrate on my studies. All my life I had never been that stupid nor had I ever been embarrassed like that day. On the contrary I have been such a book worm such that I had no time for girls. In high school, I made it my goal to be at CBU and study accounts and I was getting there. So having been accepted to study the exact course of my dreams by my dream university was a dream come true and I was really excited.
Two weeks after that incidence I was now fully settled in campus although I was staying in a boarding house near the main campus just about 3 minutes walk. I was under 75% bursary but I didn’t inform my parents, I planned on informing them next semester because they had prepared to pay but out of anxiety, I applied without telling them. It was a surprise even to me when my name was found of the list for bursaries. Therefore I decided I was going to spend the money my parents had given me for my tuition.
It was a Friday evening after my last lecture as I was going to pick my roommate from the basketball court -as agreed earlier that day- when I heard a voice shouting behind me.
“Excuse me! Hey!” A female voice called.
I turned around and there she was. The woman I made myself look foolish for. I wished the earth could just swallow me up. I had made my goal to forget her and I was doing just fine till she showed up once again.
I stood motionless staring at her as she walked marvelously towards me.
She eventually got close and said, “hey remember me, Kangwa?” She read my name from my ID which was stuck near my chest. Been a freshman in campus most of us were excited and carried our IDs around.
“Yes ..am kangwa. Oh yes I can’t forget…” I stammered.
“Its a pleasure to meet you once again my good Samaritan kangwa” she said.
I felt even worse at the reminder of my stupidity. I just faced down.
“Well,” she continued. “I am very thankful for your selfless act. You are one of a kind. I mean it” she emphasized as if she noticed the shame in me.
” oh really, welcome.” I found my tongue.
“I am febby by the way.” She extended her hand towards me. We shook hands and smiled at the same time.
“Well its a ple…..asure to meet you again Fe….bby”. I was now shaking, i had never stood with a woman i desired and talked like this. God Was she irresistible! I just couldn’t find the right words to say. At last, I managed
” am heading to the basketball court to pick my roommate” I explained.
“Ok, Can I escort you?” She offered taking me by surprise.
” sure.” I replied, feeling really sweaty.
We walked to the pitch in silence and I felt really awkward. When we got there, Fred was still playing so we had to wait as we watched him play.
“So which one is your roommate?” She asked
“That guy with a band in his head” I told her.
Febby stared at Fred as he played the game he seemed to know well. I took time to study her. She had a fair complexion, medium height, long natural hair, a pointed nose and a French figure. She looked like a model. The windy blew and a few strands of hair covered her pretty face, she then moved the hair in a really cute way that made me feel attracted to her. I wanted to tell her how cute that was but I chose to shut up.
Shortly the game finished and Fred came to where we where standing.
“Hey roomie” he greeted.
“Hey, let’s go” I quickly said
” Ain’t you at least introducing me to the lady?”
“Oh pardon me, febby this is Fred my roommate. Fred meet febby”
” your……..? ” he asked jokingly
“Friend” I finished.
“Oh really, you didn’t mention u had such a pretty friend. We would make a good couple you, febby Fred, Fred febby….”
” I will be going my way now ” febby interrupted him.
“Oh OK see u.” I hand shock her and she turned to move. I watched her as she walked while Fred blankly stared at me.
“Dude, you like her? You should have mentioned before letting me say a lot of things.”
“What time did I have to explain anything to you? You spoke a million words before I could even tell you a thing. And now she is gone without even getting my line.” I complained.
“Hahahahaha! Dude! So you just met the girl today? Don’t worry you will meet another one again.” He mocked me.
“Remember the story of how I sacrificed my space for a girl kuma offices?”
“Hahahahahaha! Don’t tell me she is the one!” He laughed even harder. He now left me in a state where I couldn’t tell either he was laughing at me because she wasn’t worth the trouble or it was just funny!
“What Dude? It ain’t funny” I scolded.
” c’mon, it’s funny. Hehehehehe. And what makes it more funny is you are hesitating to get her line when you know she likes you too. Do it before she meets the second years or even fourth year students. ” he said.
“And how do you know she likes me?”
“Dude don’t be a chicken, that girl likes you I know it.” He sounded sure.
” I have never asked any girl out, nor have I asked for a line from a girl. So I need your help on this one please du……” I had barely finished my sentence when he broke into an even louder laughter. Everyone was staring and I was feeling really embarrassed.
“OK dude I knew there was something weird about you but I couldn’t guess it was this bad. Which part of Africa are you from? Man, this is the university, wake up! I had my first girlfriend in grade six and I approached her myself. Can you please be a man and get some balls!” He said those words and they made be feel like a real chicken.
“Fred, I went to school to learn and not to run after girls, are you helping me or not? Simple!”
” No dude am not! End of discussion!” he said while unlocking the door to our room.
I had to gather some guts and find the girl , get her contact details and make her my girlfriend. It seemed like a mission to me. A very hard task.
