A short story by Ike®de barrister
I HAVE BEEN A VICTIM
I regained consciousness in some minutes later, but before i opened my eyes i heard strange and mixed up voices coming out above me. I wasn’t feeling anything at that point because my sense organs were not yet restored to default.
I forced my eyelids to open but could not see anything, i felt a very bright light in my eyes, and it blared my vision.
I thought i was dead and waking up in the land of the spirits.
Strange and plenty eyeballs were staring at me but I couldn’t see their real faces, only the white part.
As i tried to lift myself up i felt so many people around me and the word ” we have got you” reflected back in my mind and i fell to the back to the ground and back to unconsciousness.
The touch was soft and tender, i felt it hit my cheeks, my chest and shaking me persistently, i climbed out from the land of the oblivion and came back to consciousness.
I gazed like a scared kid and the the voice spoke to me, it was light, Soothing and more tenor in the depth which i judged easily to be a feminine. She said to me…
Girl: Do not be afraid, it was just a game.
She shouted to her friends to help her lift me up. But i refused their help and….
Girl: We are not them, we are as victims as you are.
Me: Yeah, you are right. But who is really the victim here.
I managed to speak now
They were four guys and the girl, two of them including the girl were well dressed.
Which in some hours ago i could have boasted of that too but circumstances pushed me to certain instances that i forgot how neatness really looked like.
Me: Who are you guys and how did you get here.
Guy1: We could ask the same of you.
One of them replied without answering the question.
Me: Whatever but i don’t think we have time for introductions.
Girl: Yeah you are right. We should keep moving.
Me: We? Keep moving to where? I barely know you guys and the last time i checked you guys scared my sorry ass to unconscious.
I was still sitting on the ground, my head ached but i didn’t want them to know so i acted normal.
I might have knocked it against the beam or something.
Girl: what’s your name please?
Me: My name, elm.
I robbed my hand on my painful head and tried to remember my name.
Guy2: Nandi Asis! (God)I don’t think he remembers his name eee
One of the guys teased..
Guy3: Kuja juu! (Come on) don’t you pity that man
Me: am Jerry anyway but i don’t have time for your names.
Guy1: guys…….. guys………guys check this up.
We all drew our attention to him but He pointed to a direction…..
Guy4: wake nao!!!(its them)
A very bright light was getting closer to where we were and I think our noise drew their attention, they pointed the light on us and before one could say juck all the guys took to their heels in different directions.
I tried to lift myself up but i had no strength in me. But as i struggled to stand on my feet i felt a cold hand grab me from behind by the shoulders and helped pulled me up.
Girl: KUKIMBIA!!!!!!!! (RUN)
She commanded peremptorily and i obeyed like a slave. We run towards the police station.
I didn’t know where i got the strength and when i run pass her but She shouted from behind me.
Girl: ee wait for me ooh, is that how you are. I just helped you on you feet and now you are running like a horse.
I didn’t mind her words, i just reduced my steps and allowed her catch up with me.
Lucky we found a safe place behind the Police Camp and hid our scared and tired asses there.
Immediately we swerve to the hideout they run and passed us. Then i heard one of them say: “Nina hakika walikuja kwa njia hii ”
(am very much sure they came this way.)
They run ahead and
disappeared in the dark.
When we were under the bridge alone i took that chance to ask some questions.
Me: can i know your name please
Girl: aw! Sorry, am Makeri Bella. But call me Bella
Me: ok Bella, so what happened and how do you happen to be here at this dangerous time ….and …who were those guys you were with?
Girl: hmm long story oo.
But in short one of the guys is my brother, we travelled from Malinda this afternoon to Kitale.
We didn’t hear the news like we would have set off early. We reached Kitale around 6pm and unfortunately our car broke down on our way. We couldn’t get any car at that time ’cause it was almost 7pm and we tried getting help from the houses around but neither of them will even open up their doors to receive us.
Me: Really! But did you try calling anyone you know around.
Girl: oh yh we did but none of them was will to help us considering the time we called.
Me: so after the houses refused to lend a hand what happened
Girl: we decided to get help from other distances houses but on our way we were chased by some group of men in blacks and with horrifying masks and costumes. They chased us till we swerved them. We barely escaped with our heads.
Me: wow! Quiet a story. I think we need to move out of hear. Those people might come back and search this place.
She agreed and we move out from our hideout.
Me: so what do we do next. I suggest we stick together. We are safer together and if you want you can follow me to my house. Where do you stay.
Girl: actually we stay in Kitale here, behind the Kenyan District Hospital.
As we talked my eyes never ceased scanning the environment for any unusual movements. As we discussed on what to do the lights came back, but it appeared very small from a distance we notice them first and took to our heels on a different root and hoped they had not seen us.
To be continued…….
