A short story by Ike®de barrister
I HAVE BEEN A VICTIM
I was rather unlucky ’cause the darkness was already upon me and confusion ceased me for a moment, unmoved and unshaken i stood there without knowing what to do. Then I adventituously started to walk, through the semi-dark down the road, whence i came forth.
I had no option but to walk home and if lucky, perhaps, i might meet a vehicle on my way and beg for a lift to my neighbourhood or anywhere closer provided its in my direction. A direction to my safety and a shelter for my ‘head’.
After thirty minutes of walk the darkness grew thick, especially from a distance, all the lights were out. And noise from night insect and barking dogs echoed through the dark hollows.
Short walls and small kiost created shadows of animated figures. Some even looked like real monsters in the dark. I only walked past that area with switched off mind and body. I felt hollow and like a robbot, my entire body felt heavy but unalive. I felt nothing. I only heard the sound of my steps and the scary echoes around me.
I continued down the the road through the brick lane infront of the Atlantic bank with careful steps.
After a time of walking lonely through the thick dark and honking noises from bats and night creatures; emanating from hollow spaces in between containers, shops and broken kiosts, my legs suddenly grew lighter and lighter And then an irresistible force, like gravity put a pushing pressure on me from behind, i resisted it initially, then it grew stronger and stronger until endurance broke down. The anxiety of someone sneaking up on me reached it climax and before i could hear jack i took to my heels.
I run and run and the more i run faster the more i felt someone catching up with me.
i couldnt stop running even though my breath grew fast and my heart beat thick. I run until my body broke down and lost balance.
But Luckly, there was an electric poll ahead of me so i clumsily run into it; hugged the poll head on; panting and caughing, i struggled for breath. Then I felt vapour coming out of my head as it grew big and small systematically with an oozing pain.
I moved stylishly from the poll and collapsed straight up on the bare floor infront a shop. I rested there for some minutes until i regained my equilibrium and continued my journey.
It was unbearable for a soul to wander lonely through such a horrific scene. Fear isnt a thing to play with.
As i continued walking and panting, a picture of King Mompusa II fearsome executioners appeared in my mind and opened up my members to an antagonizing shiver with those scary figures and it taunted me.
But a quiet appreciatable idea crept my mind, i planned to practically find a place and hide after every 30mins of walking. Especially any time i felt an unusual force in the environment.
It was a good idea, it really helped me to release myself of an amount of tension.
I lingered about one corner to another any time my instincts told me it was necessary. It kept me going.
Although there were lights out but it also seemed People were refusing to let lights from their rooms penetrate their windows. It was so dark that sometimes i felt i could touch the darkness with my palm.
Or perhaps i was being delusional- which was a possibility ‘caus the situation availed to certain possibilities i couldn’t really explain.
Soon after i passed the Atlantic Bank and headed towards the Kenyan government hospital, i saw two people from a distance at the roundabout ahead of me, they were big and stout, one was pointing his hands to the OTL telecommunications and the other, who was holding something that looked like a machete stood stiff, never moved or shaked. They both were standing in the middle of the roundabout and some light rays from the left, of their position, perhaps the Oglim filling station or a vehicle of some sort, made their presence noticeable.
When i first set my eyes on them my heart boiled; my head grew heavy and the joints of my structure loosened. A very chilled feeling run through my body from head to foot.
That was when my fate got clear to me; i wasnt going to meet my mum again, with the head i promise to keep save.
Tears begun to flow down my cheeks without my will consenting to it and my body vibrated like the starting engine of an authomobile car.
I acted fast and swerved behind a rejected kiost, well positioned enough to conceal my presence from them.
But unluckily, it attacked me antagonisingly, scratched my hands…..
i screamed, jumped and reclined steps behind. Then the kiost broke down hopelessly infront of me due to the pressure i left on it..
i nearly passed out.
It was a cat which was also taking shelter in the old kiost. I disturbed it peaceful sleep which i guess displeased it. Or perhaps, i just scared the hell out of it too…
The two executioners at the roundabout tormented me miserably watch out for episode three
To be continued…
