‘Oga, good afternoon,’ Rhoda greeted as Tony entered the house.
‘thank you’ Tony replied weakly as he cast another glance at Rhoda.
There was something different about her, she looked absolutely different from her normal self.
He scanned her face and saw she was wearing make up today. She was wearing low cut singlet which ended at her navel, then a transparent white bum short which ended just after her buttocks. She wasnt wearing panties leaving her big a-s in full view.
Tony was irritated. When did this start? Why was she dressing like a prostitute on her way out to work? The Rhoda he knew was decent and very conscious of her dressing.
‘get me my lunch’ Tony said, forcing himself to stop looking at her b—–s which were in full view save for her n—–s.
‘yes sir’ Rhoda replied.
Tony thought she said it seductively and then winked at him but he dismissed the thought. He was imagining things.
‘and change into a more decent cloth. I dont like this’
Rhoda looked down in embarrasment, before nodding her head and left
The way Rhoda swayed her hips got him turned on. He thought of grabbing her and kissing her but he dismissed it. There was no way, he, Tony Brown will stoop so low as to sleep with his maid, no way!
The door bell rang and he started. Who could it be? He wasnt expecting anyone. Maybe it was Alice or one of Maria’s friends.
He lazily stood up and opened the door. He was speechless for a while.
‘yes its me. Long time no see honeypie’ The tall blonde said with a wide smile.
Holy s–t! Tony cursed.
Then forced an uneasy smile ‘its such a very long time Valdez’
‘wont you at least give me a hug?’ Ximena asked and when Tony hesitated for a while, she spoke again ‘its okay, i understand. We didnt part on very good terms’ a frown creased her brows and Tony smiled.
‘come in Valdez’
She smiled and went inside ‘wow! What a luxirious house you have here honeypie, i love it’
‘thank you Valdez. Uhm, you may have a seat’
‘i’d prefer if you call me Ximena or Ximmy. Remember, you…..’
‘i’d rather call you Ximena’ Tony said immediately.
A smile of disappoinment appeared on her face, then she sat down.
‘what do i offer you Val….Ximena?’
‘dont you have maids around the house?’
‘uhm, i do. What do i offer you?’
‘you know what i like honeypie, dont you?’
‘uhm you see, i’d rather you call me….you know Tony. No honeypie whatsoever please’
Ximena looked down at her toes, feeling bad, ‘i cant even call you honeypie?’
‘i’m sorry but that era has passed Ximena’
‘yeah right, you forgotten all about me’
‘i’m very sorry’
‘its alright,’ she forced a smile ‘its only logical that you’ve forgotten about me. I mean its been 20years. And, though you havent changed one bit, things can never be the same any longer. I know that’
‘thanks for your understanding Ximena’
‘why do i get the feeling that you are not happy to see me honey…..Tony?’ Ximena asked smiling.
Tony smiled too ‘how can you say that. Its the first time i’m seeing you in 20 years so why on earth wont i be happy seeing you? When did you come in the country?’
Ximena grinned from ear to ear ‘i’m coming from the airport’
‘really? Wow, impressive’
‘actually, i visited Nigeria because of you. Just to see you, because i missed you. I mean, the friendship we used to share’
‘hmm, nice. So are you married now?’
‘uh?’ she wasnt expecting that ‘hell not. I mean, i’m….i’m a widow’
‘my God! I’m so sorry now Ximena’
Ximena chuckled ‘no need to be sorry, seven years is gone already. So where are your wife and kids?’
‘my….my wife is late. And i have just one daughter’
‘oh my! How come we both lost our partners? Fate really is on our side’
‘have you any kids?’
‘not really. Fabian and i never really had kids till he died’
‘oh. So how’s Mexico?’
‘Mexico is really nice. Way better than Nigeria’
Tony laughed ‘oh please! You are just trying to promote your country. If its better, then why are you here?’
‘i’m here because of you Tony. For us to continue what we long started’
Tony raised a brow, then frowned ‘what do you mean Ximena?’
Ximena laughed ‘just trying to make a joke. To, you know, ease up the tension here’
Her laughter was like music to his ears and he realised he kind of missed it. But, its been 20years. 20years since he last saw Ximena.
Thinking about it once more, he realised that love never worked out for him. Why?
Ximena Valdez, his secondary school lover, had broken up with him because of a new guy in school then. She claimed the guy was best for her and broke it off with him. They had been enemies before her Mexican father died and she and her mother, from Mexico as well, left Nigeria for their country. That was the last he had heard of her.
Then Naomi, he loved her. He loved her with all his heart but the cold hands of death had snatched her from him. All thanks to her mother, the witch!
And now Alice, well her case was complicated. She claimed to love him whereas she loved someone else, she was just with him for the things she could get for him. And now, she was with him again, playing the saint of the story. He snorted, women! He would never understand them.
Then he remembered the way Ximena and him had fought seriously after their break up. He couldnt let her go. Back then, she was his life and he couldnt survive without her, though she was a foreigner. So he had accosted her new boyfriend that time and always fought with him, beating the guy pulp and blue.
And then Ximena, the tomboy and fighter stood up for her boyfriend and….he smiled. He wondered where Elvis was now.
‘a penny for your thoughts’ Ximena said interrupting his thoughts.
‘what were you thinking?’ she asked.
‘nothing in particular’ he replied casually.
‘really? Or were you thinking about us? The memorable times we shared together, our romance?’
‘or stop it Ximena, there’s no reason to remember all that. By the way, how did you and Elvis end up?’ he asked.
Ximena stared at him ‘why are you asking?’
He shrugged ‘curiousity’
‘curiousity killed the cat’
He chuckled ‘i know’
‘well, Elvis and i didnt really work. Back then, i was immature. I was chasing shadows. I thought i knew what was best for me. I thought Elvis was the one for me. While you prepared so much for your WAEC then or whatever it was, and paid less attention to me, he showered me with alot of attention. He was always there when i was lonely. And then, one day i asked him if he was preparing for his WAEC at all and he said yes. Then i asked him how he managed to create time for me, and he confessed that he loved me. He said if you really loved someone, you will create time for that person no matter how busy you are. Leaving me in doubt if you ever loved me enough to create time for me despite you studying for your examinations. While we were together only on weekends, Elvis and i were together virtually all the time. While you called me once in two days, Elvis called me every two hours. Though i understood why you had less time for me, Elvis kept convincing me that his love for me was greater than your love for me. And in my immature mind, i figured it was true. Then i started to drift away from you. And then one day, someone told me to stay with someone who loves me more than i can imagine than someone who loves me little, ‘ a small laughter escaped her throat ‘and i did just that. I thought i was in love with Elvis more than i was in love with you, that’s why i chose him over you. And i hated you for telling me you loved me and yet you couldn’t create time for me even if you were writing your WAEC or whatever. How could i end up with someone like that? That was what i thought then’
‘wow! How low you thought of me then. So how did you and Elvis break up?’
‘well, he never really loved me. He planned it with Vannessa. Because she was obsessed with you then and wanted you for herself. So she wanted us apart’
‘yeah, after our break up, Vannessa kept coming to me, trying to seduce me and all that but i never fell for it. The childish love i had for you then was stronger than lust’
‘you didnt fall but i fell for it. I was vulnerable and stupid then’
‘Ximena, you are crying’
She smiled ‘i’m sorry but i always get emotional whenever i think about our love story which never had the happy ever after i always dreamt of. All thanks to me. That’s why Tony, i’ve come so i could correct my mistakes. To take back what i lost. I am wiser now and fate made us lose our spouses so we could be together. Because we are meant to be together honeypie’ Ximena said.
Tony laughed ‘oh Ximena, its all in the past. That era has passed and besides that, there’s someone else’
‘oh. I didnt know that’
‘its okay. So, tell me about you? What do you do now?’
‘i’m a fashion designer now’ her voice sounded weak and tired.
‘you seem tired’
‘yes, i am tired’
‘so where do you reside? I mean where will you stay?’
‘in an hotel of course, where else? I dont know anyone else in Nigeria but you’
‘oh. How about you stay here? I mean, there’s no one in the house. I will soon be leaving for the hospital so, you can stay here’
Ximena smiled brightly ‘thank you so much honeypie. You are so considerate. How on earth would i have thought that you never loved me simply because you were busy studying? I was so foolish’
‘i’m just helping you Ximena. No strings attached okay?’
‘i understand. By the way, what are you going to do in a hospital? Dont tell me you became a doctor because i know you are a business man’
‘oh, i’m not a doctor. My daughter Maria was admitted so i have to go see her’
‘oh poor girl. What happened? Is she sick?’
‘she was shot two days ago’
Ximena’s hands flew to her mouth ‘good gracious! Who on earth would want to kill a little girl?’
‘i really dont know Ximena. This is the second attempt on her life. She is such an innocent girl and i dont know why anyone would hate her as much as to kill her’
‘my God, this is the second time? How old is she?’
‘oh poor little girl, i can imagine the pains she must be passing through. I feel sorry for her’
Tony shrugged and stood up ‘let me show you to your room Ximena, i just want to take a bath and go back to the hospital’
Ximena stood up too ‘i want to go with you. I want to see her’
Alice raised her head and saw Tony coming, she smiled. And then she saw a strange white woman walking with him. The blonde woman was pretty, deep blue eyes, as blue as the ocean, pink lips and she had white skin. Who was she?
She felt a tinge of jealousy seeing the two of them together. Could they be dating? And then she mentally slapped herself for that thought.
Maybe she was just a business partner who is concerned about his daughter’s welfare. She knew Tony dealed alot with foreigners. But hell, why would a foreigner be concerned about his daughter’s welfare? Their relationship should just be business related.
Or maybe that was Tony’s new prey. He was going to sleep with her and dump her the way he dumped her. She laughed withing herself. She pitied the woman because she was going to end up just like her.
‘hi Alice, you are here already’ Tony said interrupting her thoughts.
‘oh yeah. I…i thought i had see you…see you here’ Aice stammered.
‘who is she?’ the white woman asked.
‘she is Alice. Alice, meet Ximena, my friend and ex, Ximena meet Alice my…..ex as well’
‘nice to meet you’ Ximena said stretching her hands.
‘its nice to meet you too’ Alice said taking her hands ‘you must be a foreigner’
‘oh yes, i’m from Mexico’
‘wow! Anyways, welcome to Nigeria’ Alice said.
‘Alice, have you spoken to the doctor?’ Tony asked.
‘no, i just got here’
Tony reached for her hand and squeezed it gently ‘thanks for your support. I really appreciate it alot’
‘anything i do, i do because i love you and Maria’ Alice said absentmindedly.
‘what??’ Ximena asked ‘what do you mean by you love him?’
Alice looked at her, then to Tony ‘it was all a set up by Gilbert, Tony. The baby i’m carrying, the pregnancy i never truly aborted is yours. I love you Tony, i’ve always loved you. I dont have anything with Gilbert. He was only trying to break us apart. I swear it to you Tony, i’ve never cheated on you. The kiss we shared was a moment of weakness. I….i’m sorry for everything. But i really love you’
Ximena frowned at her, then looked at her ‘who the hell is this b—h???’
‘watch your tongue young lady, i’m not a b—h. I’m the love of his life, do you hear me?’ Alice said.
‘hell you are!’ Ximena retorted.
Tony went close to Alice and hugged her ‘i love you too Alice’
‘what nonsense!’ Ximena fumed and stormed out of the building.
